Tip 2: While delivering your luggage on Schiphol, check if your luggage can go directly to Longyearbyen. If your flight has an extra landing within mainland Norway (e.g. Tromsø), you usually have to pass customs at Oslo-Gardermoen. In case of doubt, go directly to the SAS service desk in Gardermoen, get yourself a number for the waiting line (it saves sometimes an hour waiting) and check with them if your luggage will appear in Gardermoen to pass customs or if it has continued to Longyearbyen. Tip 3: The bus brings you to a hotel for 50 NOK per person, a taxi costs about 120 NOK (prices in 2008).The camp ground is close to the airport, in the direction of the fjord. Hoteloptions are Mari-Ann's Polarrigg (find the proper door which is marked "resepsjon" see middle door picture 2), Gestehuset 102 (30 minutes walk to the city centre) or Russkiy Dom (behind UNIS). The last two are cheapest but maybe booking.com has even better options. When you enter any hotel in Svalbard, you have to leave your shoes at the entrance. This is a common habit in Spitsbergen | ||

| Outside entrance to Lufttransport | Inside: left to waiting room, other door to hangar | Hangar Lufttransport |
Tip 4: Your route to Lufttransport while arriving at Longyearbyen airport is a bit hidden. You take your luggage on a cart, leave the airport and trun left. After a bend to the left, you enter the first door. This door is for snow protection. Picture 3 has not the route you have taken sofar. From ground level it looks like picture 3. This snow door brings you in a roofed passage. To the left, it is usually safe to leave luggage until a departure on the same day. Straight forward you enter lufttransport. The left door is to the waiting area, the straight forward door is to the hangar. If close to departure you can walk straigt on in the hall to the hangar where there is someone to weigh all your luggage (including handluggage). You will be charged for any weight above 20 kilogram on the final invoice of KingsBay. Then return to the hallway and take the stairs to the waiting room, remove your shoes and go up to the waiting room. Free coffee behind the bookshelves. Tip 5: All luggage will be stowed away during the flight. Don't forget to take your photo camera with you in the plane, and maybe try to hide some heavy things (above your allowed weight of 20 kg) in your pockets. Ear plugs are regarded as extra comfort during the flight and can be found at the weighing desk. Tip 6: Enjoy your trip, the pilot will warn you for departure, but be prepared for waiting. |
