encounter with a polar bear | 8 July 2025 |
A calm trip to Kongsfjordneset to read out some temperature loggers together with Milan, Friederike, Louis, and Karein. We came across a carcass, footprints, and then... two polar bears further ahead. To get to the boat we had to walk in the direction of the bears. At first, they just watched us, but then they started moving toward us. We walked even faster and made it to the boat, and just five minutes after we were in the water, the two bears were already at the exact spot where we had come ashore. Fortunately, we stayed calm and were well-prepared, so everything went smoothly.
