PFAS in Ny-Ålesund

De afgelopen week hebben we monsters verzameld van water, schuim en biologisch materiaal (invertebraten) voor het meten van PFAS. PFAS in Ny-Ålesund is voor een groot deel te herleiden naar een groot diesel-lek midden jaren tachtig. De diesel is toen afgedekt met PFOS houdend blusschuim wat door een groot deel van het dorp is verspreid. Daarnaast vinden we ook andere PFAS-componenten die we minder goed kunnen verklaren. We proberen nu te begrijpen hoe PFAS zich verspreid in het ecosysteem in en rond Ny- Ålesund. Schuim op de meertjes lijkt een belangrijke concentrator van PFAS en heeft daarom onze bijzondere aandacht. De invertebraten waar we PFAS in meten zijn daphnia, lepidurus arcticus (zoetwater) en gammarus (zeewater).
